Billa Movies first part realese in 1980 hero Superstar Rajinikanth
now Billa 2007 Release in Dec 14 hero Ajith

The worst piece of Billa was Ajith's pathetic performance. Prancing about like a Korangu than a seasoned actor, Ajith looks wooden in most scenes. There's absolutely no range in his emotions or his dialogue delivery.

One of the crucial scenes in the old Billa is when the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Balaji) convinces a street performer Rajappa (Rajnikanth) to impersonate the don after Billa's death. That memorable scene was handled with great finesse by Rajnikanth but completely messed up by Ajith in the new Billa.

While the story of the new Billa - filmed mostly in Malaysia - broadly follows that of the old Billa, the remake's story is disjointed with a careless screenplay that is frequently jarring. To put it succinctly, Billa is the eponymous story of a ruthless criminal and the efforts of the police to capture him and his gang.

Although a movie belonging to the action genre, much of what passes for action in Billa, whether the car chases, the killings or the fight scenes, are downright pedestrian and have been beaten to death in other movies. Hardly anything to write home about let alone savor.

Even the opening scene in Billa in the airport hangar was nothing extraordinary.

Adding to viewers' agony in Ajith's Billa are the two so-called actresses Nayantara and Namitha

In the Seval Kodi song, Ajith looked ridiculous prancing about in jeans while everyone around him is dressed in religious garb. Is there no limit to nonsense

Rating for Movie:
Kumutham : Billa Movie 42 / 100
Vikatan : Billa Movie 42 / 100

KALLOORI Reviews

Cast: Tamanna, Akhil, Hemalatha
Music: Joshua Sridhar
Direction: Balaji Sakthivel
Producer : Sankar

After a huge, trendsetting hit, some directors consciously attempt a film in a different genre to prove their versatility while others play it safe by presenting the same kind of film under the view that that is what audiences expect from them. Kaadhal director Balaji Sakthivel falls in the latter category. And his attempt to deliver the same kind of film proves to be his follow-up film Kalloori's strength and weakness. The naturalness and realism are welcome and refreshing but the attempt to make it emotional seems artificial and forced and has the exact opposite effect than what was intended.
Shobana(Tamanna) has joined B.A(History) in the Arts college in a small town but thinks of it as just a temporary stay since she is waiting to hear about her admission into the prestigious Birla Academy in New Delhi. Initially aloof, she warms up to a particular group of students who studied together in school and so are closely-knit group in college too. She soon becomes an inseparable part of the group and shares in their joy and sorrow.

Colleges in Tamil cinema usually have no semblance of realism. When they are not futuristic, unreal buildings housing students in designer clothes, they are nondescript buildings that rarely figure in the proceedings and are little more than a place for the students to dance and fight. Professors and headmasters become comedians while teachers are skimpily dressed sex objects the students can ogle. Kalloori finally brings realism to the college campus. The fun atmosphere is nicely brought out as the students have fun in class and outside(the teachers join in too but not always). But we also see the students attend class, write exams, practise for an athletic meet and go on an educational tour. The conversations the students have, the problems they encounter, the quarrels they get into all seem real. Seeing the proceedings here, its easy to believe that Balaji trained his camera on students in a real, small-town college.

Inspite of having many main characters, each of them manages to have something special that makes them stand out. Each of them fulfils a role(Kayal is the moral compass, Ramesh is the joker and so on...) that makes the group feel complete as a whole. Their backgrounds, though mentioned only briefly, play an important part in making them three-dimensional characters rather than cardboard figures. Once we know their stories, we realize that they are laughing inspite of their troubles; they share their sorrow and not just laughter and their friendship takes on a whole new meaning. The supporting characters too play a big part in making the characters seem well-rounded. The parents and siblings are, for the most part, well-meaning characters who are sacrificing a lot to see the student succeed in life.

There have been movies(Prashanth's Piriyaadha Varam Vendum or pretty much every other Murali-starrer would be some examples) where a character silently carried love in his heart without revealing it to the object of his affection. Kalloori sees two such characters but at different times though. When the first character hesitates to reveal his true feelings, it is understandable since it can be attributed to confusion and indecision. His struggle is nicely brought out. But by the time the second character shows the same symptoms, we've had enough of it. This character reveals the feelings in a very contrasting, interesting way but it goes on for too long and tests our patience.

The final section of the film It feels completely unnecessary and is a transparent ploy by Balaji to deliver what he thinks people expect from him after Kaadhal. The climax of Kaadhal itself felt a little overwrought and manipulative but compared to Kalloori's climax, it seems very subtle and straightforward.

Tamanna is the only familiar face in the film. Inspite of her background story, it initially feels a little odd seeing her among the students in the small town. But she gradually wins us over. She looks simple but pretty and performs well. The rest of the cast is good considering they are new. Akhil and Hemalatha get the meatiest characters and so make the best impression though their expressions could use some work. The actor playing Ramesh is completely natural while the actress playing the shy one surprises with her transformation in the inter-college cultural festival. Sariyaa Idhu Thavaraa... is a nice number from Joshua Sridhar.

'Kettavan' Change of heroine?

>> Monday 15 October, 2007

Was Simbu perhaps in haste? When he met SS Music presenter Lekha Washington at a function, her sprightly expressions and energetic way of speaking impressed him and he straight away announced that she would be the heroine of 'Kettavan.'

Already 20 days of shooting has been done for 'Kettavan.' On checking the footage, he found that he did not like Lekha's acting. So he's afraid that to continue to shoot with her would bring down the quality of the film.

So, it is said that Simbu plans to remove the scenes featuring Lekha and feature Asin stead. Till now, neither Lekha nor Simbu have commented upon these rumours.

If this were indeed true, would it be easy for Simbu to get Asin's call sheet? Asin is busy in Hindi films and hence keeping away from Tamil films for the moment.

Whichever way one looks at it, this is a bad time for 'Kettavan'!

Kamal Hassan accused of stealing script

>> Thursday 11 October, 2007

South film assistant director Senthil Kumar claims he wrote the script for the actor-director's new film, Dasavatharam

Dasavatharam, the new film starring Kamal Hassan in which the actor portrays 10 different roles, is facing problems even before its release.

Hassan is being accused of stealing the story from Senthil Kumar, an assistant director, who has filed a police complaint against the actor.

Kumar claims that the script for the film was written by him and on August 8, 2005, he gave the same to Murali, an employee of Rajkamal Films, which happens to be Hassan's production company.

Despite being invited to the Rajkamal offices on several occasions, Kumar was denied access to Hassan but was told by Murali that the actor had liked the script and was turning it into a film. Kumar was promised the post of assistant director.

However, Kumar was later shocked to read about the storyline of Dasavatharam in a magazine and approached Rajkamal offices once again to inquire why he was not informed of the project being launched. He had, after all, written the script.

When he once again failed to get a response from the production company, an angry Kumar swore to fight for a hefty compensation from Hassan.

When contacted, Hassan's PR representative refuted Kumar's claim and, on behalf of Hassan, said, "Kamal feels that there are better things for him and the police to do and he does not want to waste time speaking to the press. If an inquiry was made however, he would speak directly to the police."

Meanwhile Murali says that his role in Rajkamal films is that of a mere cashier and he does not contribute to filmmaking, "I don't know this Senthil Kumar and I have not met him. I don't even know how he got my name," says Murali.

The film is a mega production and apparently just one song of the movie is budgeted at Rs 3 crore. The film is being shot about 25 km from Chennai.

With his performance in the Dasavatharam, Hassan hopes to break the record set by actor Sivaji Ganesan, who portrayed nine roles in the film Navarathri.

In the Hindi remake of the said film, actor Sanjeev Kumar played Sivaji's role and the Bollywood version was titled Naya Din Nayi Raat.

Superstar’s green signal for Soundarya

Superstar’s green signal for Soundarya

Not so before long time was maestro Ilayaraja who refused to score music for title song in a television serial in Kalaignyar TV. Though Maestro refused to take up this offer, later Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi himself buzzed him up and invited him to come to his house.

Later as Ilayaraja came to CM’s house, both of them hugged and started to share their old memories. Getting convinced with things, finally Ilayaraja agreed to score music for the title song.

Now the same thing is happening to Soundarya Rajnikanth as she has been getting offers to act in serials in host television shows in Kalainyar TV. Both daughter and father feared this would have political influence over them and sooner or later they were convinced by the officials of Kalainyar TV.

So after great confusion, Rajnikanth finally granted green signal to his daughter to make her presence on small screen.

Why should Rajini and Mani work together?

>> Tuesday 9 October, 2007

Even before his Sivaji lost its luster at the box office, rumors of Superstar Rajinikanth's next project swarmed the media. His meetings with Mani and later with Kamal created a furor in the media over the possibility of a magnum opus with the three titans joining forces. Rajini was expected to star in the film, produced by Kamal (he may even do a possible guest role) and directed by Mani.

Though none of them officially confirmed the story, they didn't deny meeting each other either.

Anything and everything to do with biggies Rajini, Kamal and Mani, is breaking news and so was this one too, topping most coffee table conversations.

However, as an anticlimax, the Superstar recently went on record to deny his prospective plans of working with Mani or Kamal. "I haven't decided on my future projects yet and rumors about my association with Mani Ratnam or Kamal are not factual," the Superstar spelled out. That left few million fans heart broken.

In retrospect, Rajini and Mani might have lost out on a golden opportunity.

The last time they came together was for “Thalapathy” in 1991.It was a contemporary version of the story of Karna taken from the Mahabharata. Mani presented a very mellow and sensitive Rajinikanth, sans his usual mannerisms and histrionics. We saw Rajini the “actor”, rather than Rajini the “phenomenon”. Rajinikanth delivered a stellar performance (one of his best to date) in spite of a stalwart like Mamooty performing alongside him.

Some critical reasons as to why Mani and Rajini should join forces after sixteen years:

• They both possess a tremendous fan following all over the world, arguably the biggest for an actor and director respectively. Expectations will be sky high, giving the trade the biggest opening possible.

• They are internationally acclaimed doyens of Tamil cinema, capable of creating the largest platform ever to market an Indian movie overseas.

• Rajini is renowned for his larger-than–life roles, and Mani is a director who thrives on scripting such characters, with his pragmatic and minimalistic approach, be it Velu Nayakar of “Nayagan” or Gurubhai of “Guru”. It will be a match made in heaven!

• It would be a true challenge for both Mani and Rajini, driving them to deliver their personal best. We can expect nothing short of excellence and perfection in every department.

• Mani is capable of bringing out the best in any actor and Rajini is a director’s delight, surrendering himself completely to a director he trusts, making it a lethal combination.

• The present day audience is mature, refined and has an appetite for tasteful and innovative cinema. Rajinikanth in a Mani Ratnam movie is the best they can ask for.

A solid story lays the foundation for a successful film and hence to take our argument to the next level, we also compiled a list of scripts that might work for this talented duo:

Script 1: The safest bet - A cinematic memoir, based on a powerful and charismatic real - life personality in tandem with the Superstar’s image, this would be like performing on home ground for both of them.

Script 2: There was a serious consideration a few years ago by Mani Ratnam to cast Rajinikanth in a movie a la James bond style. It was supposed to be called “Ragasiya Police”. This project, for reasons unknown never materialized and was ultimately shelved. This script could be revived with a contemporary feel, as a romantic suspense thriller, based on the life of a secret service agent who has taken on the mission of annihilating a powerful enemy.

Script 3: Mani being the master political director, and his fan fraternity ever aspiring for him to foray into politics, Rajinikanth as an enigmatic, political celebrity, who brings about changes to the system, would be a treat for all his admirers.

Script 4: A superhero in a sci-fi thriller, on the lines of Spiderman or Superman would have his tiny tot fans go wild with delight. This would also be a visual extravaganza for all Rajini addicts, who already envision him as a champion of the masses.

Script 5: Now for the nonconformists, a simple, sweet and lucid story about family, relationships and love featuring Rajini in a completely different avatar, of a loving father or a devoted husband, complementing his age and experience with some magical music, will definitely be a breath of fresh air to all Rajini buffs.

After all, isn’t the Superstar a doting father and a caring husband in real life too? One would need immense courage to craft such a radically different movie after “Sivaji”, but then, doesn’t fortune favor the brave?

Their union, if it had materialized would have undoubtedly been one of most incredible things to have happened to Tamil cinema or perhaps Indian cinema in recent times. Let us hope for the best. Who knows what the future holds, NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, right?!

Rajnikanth congratulates Ram Charan Teja

>> Monday 8 October, 2007

It is a well-known fact that both Rajnikanth and Tollywood superstar Chiranjeevi are good friends over for a long time. This Tuesday, superstar Rajnikanth happened to watch special screening of Chirutha that marks the commencement of Cheeranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Teja as the hero.

After watching the movie, Rajnikanth was more impressed by the way film was made and congratulated the young starlet for making a stupendous performance in the movie. Later as other stars watched the movie, they were also impressed by the movie and idea of remaking the film is going on amongst various directors and actors of Tamil cinema. So Kollywood can expect another remake of Tollywood film, isn’t????

The Shivaji Movie AVM 9th Film

The affinity that the super star has for AVM, which is celebrating its diamond jubilee, is easy to understand. `Murattukalai' (1980) was the beginning of what has proved to be a long and fruitful association — `Pokkiri Raja' (1982), `Paayum Puli' (1983), `Nallavanukku Nallavan' (1984), `Mr. Bharath' (1986), `Manidhan' (1987), `Raja Chinna Roja' (1989) and `Yejaman' (1993). `Sivaji' is the ninth.

Rajini fans, who cannot wait for the release of `Sivaji,' have one more reason to celebrate. It is the superstar's 100th Tamil film, a fact he was not aware of and was pleasantly surprised when told at a function he attended recently at the AVM Studios. The credit for ferreting out this vital piece of information goes to the inimitable Film News Anandan, who came up with more details about Rajini's career. Rajinikanth has acted in 173 films of which 99 are Tamil. Telugu films account for 16, Kannada 11, Malayalam 2, Hindi 24 and one each in Bengali and English (Blood Stone). Besides he has made guest appearances in 19.

After the puja ceremony was completed marking the launch of Ananda Film Circuit's maiden venture `Billa,' Rajini headed for the office of AVM Saravanan, who is producing `Sivaji' along with M.S.Guhan. There he posed with all the 250 employees of the studio for a photograph. Director Sp. Muthuraman (joint producer for `Sivaji') was also present on the occasion.

Mr. Saravanan was all praise for Rajinikanth. "I haven't come across a hero more well-behaved," he said. "The fame has not gone to his head. Declining to use an air-conditioned caravan, he retires to his room after the day's work and relaxes. All he needs is a decent bed to sleep on and a place to do yoga and meditation," he continued. "And what is more, apart from the advance of Rs.1001, he has not taken any money as payment. `That can wait. Let's first finish work,' was all he said," Saravanan concluded
